Sortie to Arles!

A bit of photo documentation from my weekend excursion to Arles in the south of France. The city is known for its historic Roman ruins: le théâtre, l'arène, etc. En fait, the period of Roman conquest (known as l'age Gallo-Romain) began when the leader of les Gaulois, (the first inhabitants of France, back when the area of France was referred to as La Gaule, thus "Gallo") Vercingetorix, was conquered by Julius Cesar at Alesia in 52 BC. The Roman Empire covered a vast area of what is now the south of France, including, of course, Arles. But there is more to Arles than Roman rubble (as beautiful as that rubble may be)...

VAN-GOGH, for example! (In French, he's pronounced Van Gaugg). Here is a placard of his famous 'Pont' painting. The bridge is now simply referred to as "Pont Van-Gogh"= Van Gogh's Bridge, but the actual name is "Le pont de Langlois, named for the man who gave the orders to lower and raise the bridge. Van-Gogh misunderstood the name, and referred to it as Le Pont d'Anglais=British Bridge. Silly Van-Gogh!

And here it is!
